The engine and its inputs

Natural selection is not a source of foresight. It is a sorting consequence: inherited variants leave different numbers of descendants in a particular environment.

Short version: populations evolve when inherited variants become more or less common. Adaptation is one possible result of evolution—not another word for evolution itself.

Use four verbs, not one slogan

  1. Generate: mutation and recombination supply variants without consulting future needs.
  2. Develop: genes, cells, bodies, and environments turn inherited resources into phenotypes.
  3. Filter: phenotype–environment differences alter expected reproductive contribution—fitness.
  4. Count: selection, drift, mutation, and gene flow change variant frequencies over generations.

Repair the slogan: “survival of the fittest” is circular unless fitness is measured independently. Survival matters only when it changes descendants. “Fit” means reproductively successful here and now, not strongest, healthiest, or morally best.

Explore it: filter, don’t generate

Choose a habitat, predict the favored color, then advance one generation at a time. The population remains 40; reproductive sampling adds chance.

What the toy model hides

Real phenotypes are built by many interacting causes. Mutations can be biased in kind or location, but they are not reliably directed toward what an organism needs. Selection itself is systematic with respect to consequences; the inheritance and reproductive sampling are noisy. Both statements can be true.

Try the case

A drought leaves mostly large, hard seeds. Birds already vary heritably in beak depth. Which sentence makes the fewest unsupported claims?
